In the world of Animal Crossing, you're never alone!
Wild World makes full use of the Nintendo DS’ built-in wireless communication technology, so you can connect with friends and visit their villages, or invite them over to yours.
Up to three friends, each with a Nintendo DS and a copy of the game, can visit your village. If your friends are in the same vicinity (up to 100 feet away) you can connect wirelessly DS-to-DS.

You can also connect to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection and hook up with
friends wherever they are in the world. To do so, you’ll need a home
wireless internet connection or access to a wi-fi hotspot; of which
there are hundreds dotted around the country.
